The Wisdom of Conan O’Brien

Table of Contents

I’m particularly fond of two pieces of wisdom from Conan O’Brien.

More posts on mindset:

Every Failure was Freeing

The first is from his commencement speech to Harvard in 2000:

Success is a lot like a bright white tuxedo. You feel terrific when you get it, but then you’re desperately afraid of getting it dirty, of spoiling it.

And yet every failure was freeing, and today I’m as nostalgic for the bad as I am for the good. So that’s what I wish for all of you—the bad as well as the good. Fall down. Make a mess. Break something occasionally. Know that your mistakes are your own unique way of getting to where you need to be. And remember that the story is never over.

Work Hard and Be Kind

The second is from the closing of his final Tonight Show:

All I ask of you is one thing: please don’t be cynical. I hate cynicism – it’s my least favorite quality and it doesn’t lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.
